Hello guys today I am going to share the best places to visit in South Goa district.

As we all know Goa is best place to visit in any season of year it gives a soothing feeling and rejuvenate the life.

As Goa is my favourite place to chill out this is my third blog on Goa after Goa trip under 5000 and Sightseeing in North Goa .

So lets see some great places to visit in South Goa.

  1. Agoda

Someone said Agonda is an ideal beach destination for those who’ Quit on Monday’ and it’s definitely not an exaggeration. Yes, there are actually quieter beaches in Goa, where you’d like to spend time on the first day of the week, but Agonda appears to have some magnetic energy pulling one up. However, this beach can be a great place to spend a lazy day, not that ideal for swimming. An evening stroll at Agonda can also be ideal. A church in the center of the beach adds to this place’s beauty.

  • Highlights: Dolphin Sighting, Hill Hiking, Samdarshi’s mediation Ashram (winter), Cola Beach, Yogamea Yoga School
  • How to Reach: Agonda is only 10kms from Palolem and can be easily reached by a cab or a motorbike from Palolem.
  • Best Time to Visit: October to March

2. Loutolim

A beautiful large South Goa village, Loutolim fills you with historic surprises. It is the ancestral village of Mario de Miranda, the famous cartoonist. Find the Portuguese era relic in its churches, castles, and buildings. It’s like opening a history book to visit this charming old town. The whole village seems like a fairy tale right out of it. Next time you’re in South Goa, you have to visit. The Big Foot Museum and the church of Salvador de Mundo can be visited.

  • Highlights: Salvador do Mundo, Casa Araujo Alvares, Big Foot Museum, Miranda House, Roque Caetan House and Salvador Costs House, Sant Mirabai
  • How to Reach: Loutolim is only at a short distance from Margao, so the best way to reach here from Margao would be to take a cab or on your own motorbike.
  • Best Time to Visit: October to March

3. Shantadurga Temple

Located in Kavlem, it is dedicated to the goddess of Shantadurga. It is known as one of Goa’s wealthiest temples and was built between 1713 and 1738 AD. Goddess Shantidurga is believed to be the form of Goddess Parvati mediating between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu when there was a fierce battle.

4. Naval Aviation Museum

The museum presents the Indian Naval Aviation, weapons, safety equipment sensors and air crafts depicting the release of Goa. The military museum was founded in 1947 and is only 6 km awy from Vasco da Gama. Feel proud of the Indian naval army and aircraft’s rich histroy along with their evolution with time. You’ll also find a photo gallery of all the aircraft and a’ Silence Hall’ for meditation. This place is one of its kind in South Goa.

Important information: opening from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; admission fee is INR 20 for Indians, INR 50 for foreigners and INR 50 for camera.

5. St Xavier’s Church

South Goa’s most famous church has lovely interiors and gothic architecture. This is a must-visit in the city’s southern half.

6. Vasco Da Gama

Named after the famous explorer from Portugal, Vasco Da Gama is a gem called South Goa in the treasure trove. This small town is located at the mouth of the Zuari River on the western tip of the Mormugao Peninsula. Although infamous as Goa’s crime center due to its suburban shanty town and a large red-light area, Vasco succeeds in creating interest among tourists as it adds a different aspect to Goa’s tourism. Other than this, Vasco is well connected to the other parts of Goa, so you have to travel to Vasco anyway to reach some beautiful South Goa beaches.

  • Highlights: Baina Beach, Snorkeling
  • How to Reach: The best way to reach Vasco Da Gama is by taking a bus/cab from Panjim or Margao.
  • Best Time to Visit: November to March

7. Butterfly Beach

Goa’s unfrequented and hidden beach is a unique masterpiece. The name itself justifies the site’s beauty. If you’ve never been to this beach, it gives you more reason to go and explore its beauty. It’s actually one of South Goa’s best places to visit. Dolphins, crabs, and butterflies can also be spotted on this beach.

8. Palolem Beach

It’s just fantastic the palm grooves, shacks and the long stretch of the pristine white sand beach! It is also known for the popular Silent Disco on this beach. You can also enjoy water sports, swimming, and yoga.

9. Cavelossim

Cavelossim, the last village on the coastline of Salcete, is actually a charming place to visit. It is one of those places that no sun-worshipper can resist as it is blessed with a beautiful stretch of sand and amazing view of the sunset. Apart from it, there is a beautiful view of the confluence of Sal River and sea from Cavelossim. The beach strip is straggled with shops selling jewellery and souvenirs, as a lot of tourism is expected here throughout the year.

  • Highlights: Resorts, Sun-bathing
  • How to Reach: Cavelossim is at a distance of about 7kms from Margao, therefore it is best to take a cab or a bus from Margao to Cavelossim.
  • Best Time to Visit: October to March

10. Se Cathedral

Asia’s largest cathedral has five bells, the golden bell of which is the world’s famous and largest. The Portuguese built the cathedral to celebrate the victory of their 1950 war with the Muslim army. The church’s architecture is in Portuguese-manueline style, where the Tuscan exterior very well compliments the Corinthian insteriors.

11. Majorda

Majorda is an organized beach with many shacks to the beach. A stream separates from the beach the narrow ways. It’s a beautiful beach where lots of young crowds bask in the sun and enjoy decent meals here. Majorda is said to be the place that first taught the art of baking European breads in India, so you’ll be able to enjoy some fine cookies and cakes here. Mae De Deus is another Majorda attraction, it is an old church built in 1588 A.D. So if you’re here with your loved one, Majorda has its own charm; don’t leave before the sun sets, because the view that time is simply priceless.

  • Highlights: Majorda Village, Goan Bakers, Mae De Deus Church, Water Sports
  • How to Reach: Margao is at a short distance of about 11kms from Majorda, thus it is convenient to travel by the bus or a cab to Majorda.
  • Best Time to Visit: October to March

12. Chandor

Chandor is a sleepy town in South Goa on the bank of the Kushavati River. This destination has made its mark a major stop for its Portuguese architecture collection. This village was called Chandrapur between the 6th and 11th centuries and was considered to be the Konkan Coast’s most spectacular city. Today, Chandor is a small village with significant relics from the Portuguese era and an 11th century Hindu temple and headless Nandi Bull. Chandor’s Portuguese mansion can be a great venue for weddings and parties.

  • How to Reach: The best way to reach Chandor is by a cab from Margao.
  • Best Time to Visit: October to April

13. Cabo de Rama Fort

The Portuguese monarchs claimed this decrypted structure with towers and rustic cannons. It was a well-equipped fort with 21 guns, several military barracks and a chapel, but the place was abandoned when the Portuguese left India and later used as a government jail. Now the fort is housed by the ruins alone, but in South Goa it is a popular tourist spot. The Fort also has a Santo Antonio church in great condition that its followers still visit. It is a frequently visited place due to its mystical atmosphere, steep cliffs and majestic views. Whether you’re an adventure buff, a photo fanatic or a nature lover, it’s a perfect place for you.

14. Dhudhsagar Falls

This attractive waterfall magnetizes tourists from all over the world as it has a breathtaking charm that turns it into one of South Goa’s most visited tourist spots. This waterfall is a treat for the eyes, the literal meaning of “Milk Sea.” It lies in the vicinity of the 60-km-long Panaji city. The waterfall is located within the wildlife sanctuary of Bhagwan Mahavir and is 1,000 feet high. The gushing water that spreads through the tropical forest provides fascinating views. If you’re an adventure enthusiast, you can even walk to the waterfalls and explore the confusing paths leading to it. You can even stay close to the waterfall, at the Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation’s forest guesthouse.

15. Pequeno Island

Commonly referred to as the Bat Island, it is located in Vasco da Gama just a kilometer from Baina Beach. This is a serene island with a number of picturesque views, including sand and rocks. It is truly the paradise of a traveler seeking loneliness and, with scenic splendors, unexploited sites. The crystal clear water attracts the masses with amusing marine life. One can delve into fascinating water sports and experience the waters as never before. It’s a perfect place to go deep within the pure aura and witness tranquility. A campfire and soft soothing songs can also be enjoyed on the beach.
